Providing Equitable Care in Early Breast Cancer

Over the past decade, unparalleled clinical advances have been made in the treatment of early breast cancer. Increasing drug approvals and biologic breakthroughs across all breast cancer subtypes allow clinicians and their patients more treatment options than ever before.

Yet another great hurdle remains in oncology: ensuring that all eligible patients have access to the benefits of these important advances. Although breast cancer occurs across all racial and ethnic groups, mortality rates differ significantly. Black women still have a 40% higher mortality rate than White women, despite having similar incidence.

Experts from the Dubin Breast Center of the Tisch Cancer Institute and the Institute for Health Equity Research at Mount Sinai in New York City report on groundbreaking treatment advances in early breast cancer. They discuss research into the complex reasons for disparities in survival as well as strategies for clinicians and hospital systems to ensure access to long-term, comprehensive breast cancer care for all patients.
