Various Breast Cancer Research Challenges in Recurrence, Triple Negative BC

There are several areas that need more research in breast cancer to develop better therapies, such as in the treatment of Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Stanley Lipkowitz, MD, PhD, a senior investigator of the Women's Malignancies Branch at NCI's Center for Cancer Research, explained.

Lipkowitz cites, "tremendous progress in hormonal receptive positive cancers using targeted endocrine therapies and in HER2+ breast cancer using targeted therapies to the HER2 protein but triple negative breast cancer is a group of breast cancer that has had difficulty identifying specific targets to use for better treatments."

Secondly, he said the development of brain metastasis in breast cancer is a concern. "As we have gotten better at treating early stage or even endocrine positive or HER2+ more patients are developing brain metastasis as a sign of recurrence which is very difficult to treat."

Lastly, resistance to therapy is an area which needs more study. For example, endocrine therapy, which Lipkowitz called, "a mainstay of treatment for the majority of breast cancer patients with hormone receptors," but one where many will develop resistance.
