FDA Approves AI Algorithms for Breast Cancer Detection
The FDA approved the use of two artificial algorithms for detecting breast cancer and prostate cancer, according to a release from the manufacturer.
The DeepHealth Saige-DX™ mammography identifies suspicious lesions and assigns them suspicion levels which can be used as part of the patient’s care, catching the cancer early and reducing the need for additional scans.
“Saige-DX is built on our advanced, deep-learning algorithms. Our highly accurate AI, as is described in a Nature Medicine article last year, showed the ability to find cancer 1 to 2 years earlier than fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologists. The approval of Saige-DX represents another step forward in advancing cancer care,” Gregory Sorensen, MD, CEO and co-founder of DeepHealth, said in the release.
According to the findings in Nature Medicine, the deep learning approach “achieves state-of-the-art performance in mammogram classification, successfully extends to digital breast tomosynthesis, detects cancer in clinically negative prior mammograms of patients with cancer, generalizes well to a population with low screening rates, and outperforms five out of five full-time breast imaging specialists…”
