Unmet Needs in Diagnosis and Treatment of COPD

The biggest gap in COPD research exists in identifying the specific disease for each patient, professor Jørgen Vestbo, said. Improper labeling of the disease prevents the progress of research when patients are continually lumped into diseases which are not helpful for their management.

Regenerative medicine is needed to see how stem cell therapies can work in a more focused way to help patients who may have lost half of their lung function.

The lifecycle of the disease must be considered, as well as efforts to improve children’s overall lung health, to ensure that children can breathe clean air and finally, that they do not begin smoking as teenagers, he continued.

“We have not been good at linking primary care with specialty care,” Vestbo added.
